This is probably a very simple solution for those who know.
My wife's phone and mine are texting each others phone any message we send to another party, and when they text us back, it comes to both of our phones. I want to stop this.

Sounds like you're both logged in to the same iCloud account. The solution is one of you needs to create a new iCloud account. You can share an iTunes account to share purchases, but you'll need different iCloud accounts to keep iMessages and backups, etc, separate.

settings,messages,send & receive
You can reached by imessage at:
Choose your phone number for each one of your phones instead of the same email/icloud account.

Thanks Applejuiced. That worked. I hadn't had apple phones and this was a new problem that dogged me for months. I couldn't find the connection to the two phones getting the same texts. It was called "messages" not texts, so that was part of the confusion. I also didn't know that you could set up phones to send out and receive all of the same texts as if they were being send or received by the same phone. Great if you are policing your kids phones, not so great if your and your wife's phones are doing this.
