Texting tones

I run a iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.1
All of a sudden incoming text msgs and I do not get a tone.
There are ring tones and alert tones, what is the difference?

Check your notification center options and then messages under there for alerts.

the messages come through, it just that there is no tone announcement.

There's options there to change your tones for messages. Is there a text tone selected for messages?

Do you have Do Not Disturb on (is there a crescent moon in your status bar by the battery)?

Do you have the volume toggle on the side of your phone switched to mute (do you see the red line)?
