Textured Photographs

Can anyone recommend any good resources for creating great textured photographs?

The ones I have found through web searches do not seem to produce very good results (though I am sure part of that is my own lack of knowledge, such as is it best accomplished through brushes? texture files? PS filters? all of the above?)

Anyway, others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this would be accomplished with Layers, where you would modify the blend mode and opacity to get the effect you want.
