Today I thought of saving the blobs using iFaith and I did it. Later on, after the phone lost all his battery, and since I removed some language packages, I was stuck with a iPhone that didn't boot tethered. I had to restore, and gladly I had the blobs saved, so I could restore back to 5.0.

Thank you iFaith!

Am I correct in assuming that we can't build a signed custom firmware that also leaves out the baseband upgrade? I want to preserve my 1.59.00 baseband for unlocking purposes.

correct me if im wrong, but doesnt tiny umbrella does the same thing??
it has a version for mac also...
TinyUmbrella pulls the blobs from Apple's servers, so it can only save blobs for the currently signed firmware (in this case, only 5.0.1). Also, the method TU uses doesn't work for downgrading to any 5.x.x firmware (Apple changed the way they signed blobs). iFaith dumps the blobs from your device, and is compatible with downgrading to 5.x.x.

The iFaith Twitter says it preserves baseband

It worked perfectly! Just boot windows, that's what I did ;)

I'm not purchasing Windows just to run this one program. This is hardly a solution for Mac users.

Why do u need to buy it? Borrow it and boot in bootcamp its free?

Thanks for this thead! Now I have a restore path if I mess up my 5.0! Unlike TinyUmbrella, iFaith also saves the APticket(?) which makes it possible to make a special signed .ipsw file and restore.

Note for Mac users:
I recommend borrowing a PC/laptop with windows, pull off the blobs, create the signed .ipsw and copy it to a safe place. Then you can always restore from your mac.

I found out (the hard way) that iTunes needs to be installed on the laptop BEFORE YOU CONNECT YOUR IPHONE for the first time! Otherwise iFaith will not be able to recognise that your iPhone is in DFU mode.

Borrow? There's a Microsoft lending library around some where?

just restored to ios 5 (custom) via iFaith 1.4...

Isit possible to jailbreak it then? seems like it's not... =(

of course it's possible. What make you think not?

How so can i jailbreak then?

RS, and point the IPSW to original iOS 5 firmware? Cuz I tried pointing to custom iOS 5 but wasnt allowed to proceed.

Please advise. =)

If you use the newest redsn0w you don't have to point to any firmware, it downloads it itself. Otherwise just point to the unmodified firmware, it does not actually install it, just uses something from it (the Unix kernel, I guess).

Actually I'm pretty sure that still since it's in beta this won't work if you're on 5.0.1 (you have to point it at 5.0.0).

I think the auto recognition feature won't work on iOS 5, but should work on iOS 4 or lower.

Hi guys,

I pointed to custom IPSW and proceed to jailbreak it... it was able to cydia but it's a blank cydia icon, i tried to restart and click on it but to no avail...

now ive since restored back to custom 5.0... any idea if i can downgrade to 4.3.3/.4/.5? (i have all the blobs saved).

I restored my iPhone 4 to 5.0 using iFaith and then jailbreaked using redsn0w without any issues.

Would u like a silver spoon too?

Microsoft has a trial version of windows 7 enterprise available for download. I think it works for 90 days. Should be sufficient for your purposes. I agree it's a lot of work for a downgrade, but if you really want it...

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/cc442495

That one. Download it, install it, iFaith and u are done. Or just recompile the code to make it work on a mac :)
