Presumably the plateau is also aluminium and as prone to scratches as the rest of the phone.

I'm one of those that normally keeps their device mint (screen protector, case from new) but the plateau concerns me.

There are a lot of cases which cover the plateau, and lots that don't and are open/show the plateau.

For those with an 'open' case, how are they holding up?

Does the lip around the case opening protect the plateau when placing the phone down?

Thanks

I have a huge concern regarding this and I can't use any other case other than Apple cases

As long as the edges of the plateau are protected you should be fine. Some of us have purchased clear skins (see case thread) to cover the plateau since some of the full coverage cases can affect cellular reception.

That thread has 132 pages (and counting)!

What skin/where did you get it? Is it invisible or a design?

Which cases are these precisely, and any real concrete evidence that this is the case, or is it just baseless forum talk now being presented as fact?

I have a full coverage case with a metal kickstand that fully surrounds the plateau and no reception issues or network speed slowdown, or dropouts. Out of curiosity (as I keep reading this talk of cases affecting reception), I did multiple speed tests with the case on and off, and zero impact either way. Real-world usage, a full coverage case with a metal kickstand around the plateau has no impact at all.

Id did have a clear Xtreme skin on the plateau but binned it after I could not achieve a perfect fit. My fault no doubt but with my ham fisted fitting I still had slight obvious gaps. Having said that, my Apple case protects the plateau's exposed perimeter edge. And the film also does not protect the camera lens edges so, given the flat plateau is low risk, was happy to take the 'open' Apple case's protection alone. And yes, I have dropped it twice now, sigh, but so far, no damage to case or iPhone.

I’ve heard elsewhere on these forums that the reason Apple’s own cases leave the pro’s camera plateau exposed might be for thermal dissipation. They clearly are trying to engineer ways that the pro’s won’t get so hot.

XtremeSkins was recommended by a few. You can order just the plateau in various designs. I went with the clear matte.
Thanks. Just ordered the same (plateau only) from XtremeSkins - I’m curious, do you by chance know the difficulty level to install it?

Also - is this the selection to make to order plateau only? (see pic below):

They include good how-to videos and from previously installing skins, I don't expect it to be super difficult.

This was my concern. I have one “open” and one “Closed”. I hate the closed one (Spiege ultra hybrid), but it’s the protection I need sometimes although the lenses protrude. The open one makes me a little nervous, but it seems to just be a clone of the Apple Silicone. No problem so far with the open one. But would put on the “closed” if traveling or going to be doing something more than daily life I think. I tend to go between a black and a clear case. I like having the choice.

Launch day PM in Orange with Black TW case and no issues at all. I am careful with my phones, but they are a four figure device so my logic says that I should be careful it 😂

Apologies for hijacking this thread - I've checked out the XtremeSkins and ArmorSuit products mentioned above - but neither of them protect the actual edges of the camera plateau.

Has anyone come across any skins that actually cover the edges?

(Since that is apparently the most vulnerable to showing scratches.)

Thanks in advance.

You’re going to probably have to buy a skin that comes in one piece.

It’s going to be incredibly difficult to cover the plateau fully with a skin because of the sharp angles around it.

I've been using various (cheap) open cases for a few weeks, along with an XtremeSkin covering the plateau and mine has held up fine, no marks/scratches at all. You just need to make sure you get an open case with raised edge around the plateau that sits higher than the camera rings by a couple of mm.
