The Apple Watch Edition has already sold out in China — and it took less than an hour for the most luxurious gold version of the device, which reportedly costs 126,800 yuan ($20,000), to get completely snapped up.

Apple on Friday put the Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch, and Edition up for preorder in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, and China. Customers can now try on and buy the watches, but the company says people will not get them until weeks later in the UK — elsewhere, it could be longer. Relatively few will actually walk out of shops wearing their new accessory.

Just hours into sales in China, there was zero chance of grabbing an Apple Watch Edition, the most exclusive version. Author Ben Thompson tweeted that he had checked every store there and at every one the device was listed as out of stock, but it remains unclear just how many units have been sold and shipped on Friday.

The tweet was first spotted by Cult of Mac. Many people who lined up thousands to spend on the product, at least for now, will be bitterly disappointed.

Just thinking about the math in my head if they sold just a handful is insane. Apple sure made up for their cost by the inflation built into the Edition.

Wait.. for the Watch Editions you could actually get the watch today? I thought it was all about trying out and ordering for earliest 4/24? But maybe for the high net value folks it is different.
