I noticed today that my 2018 MacBook Pro will turn on when any key is pressed, or if the trackpad was clicked.

I thought this was a glitch of some sort, but it is confirmed in an Apple support document:
Your MacBook Pro (2016 and newer) or MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017) also turns on when you do these things:

  • Open the lid of your Mac, even if it's not connected to power.
  • Connect your Mac to a power adapter while its lid is open3.
  • Connect your Mac to a power adapter while its lid is closed and it's connected to an external display.
Additionally, MacBook Pro (2018) turns on when you press any key on the keyboard or press the trackpad.

In essence, this means the trackpad is never off. Which sort of makes it feel like the Mac is never off. It also helps to reinforce the illusion that the trackpad is a real moving object when in fact it is a solid state slab of glass.

Omg I noticed that too! For a second I thought they went back to moving trackpads!

I thought I was going mad and repeatedly restarting it instead of shutting it down!

I also noticed the SMC seems to be gone. Holding Shift-Control-Option would force shut down Macs and reset the SMC prior to the 2018 model
