Not much difference from the A13. A8 to A9 was much bigger.
Who's going to tell the difference? What can you do with 12 you can't do with 11 pro?
Good point, not worth it if you’re upgrading from last year model.
I’m upgrading from a xs max to a blue 12, always liked the screen size of the 6.1” iPhones, now that their lighter and smaller, thought I’d take the plunge, can always go back to a pro max model next year if I miss the bigger screen.
Hopefully we get 120hz, smaller notch, less power hungry 5g modem, LPTO display next year.
The A14 is impressive when you look at the numbers, it smashes every other phone and even some laptops lol.
I am more interested in the Qualcomm modem v last years intel for reception, noticed Telstra havn't given it a bluetick, not a good sign.
That compute score really jumped! Yeah the A14 is looking very good.
I hope in the 12 Pro Max it will match the 11 Pro Max battery life despite the smaller battery.

Noticed that also, must be because of apples new antenna design. 🤔
What's up with the disparity in iPad Air's A14 metal score and the iPhone 12 A14 metal score? Anyone has a logical explanation for this?
That was my first thought as well but both are clocked at 2.99Ghz and the CPU scores are almost identical from what I can see. The disparity between Metal scores is huge, the A14 in the iPad Air scores even higher than the A12Z and on the previous generation the iPad's A12 had an almost identical Metal score compared to the iPhone XS's A12.Heat management between the two? I mean one is a full sized tablet with a huge amount of room to deal with heat and so doesn’t have to throttle quite as soon as the phone, in this case a iPhone 12 which is a 6.1inch smartphone.
The iPad Air is working with a much higher range of temperature and possibly also clocked slightly higher?
All speculation on my side, but I would never expect a full sized tablet and a small smartphone to be equal on this when using the same SoC.

Ah damn! I'm hoping Telstra haven't finished testing and hence haven't updated their website. Fingers crossed the reception isn't equivalent (or worse!) compared to previous year iPhones!

I was thinking maybe the A14 in the iPad Air is able to draw more power? I guess we'll have to wait until anandtech gets a hold on the iPhone/iPad.
Here's a comparison of the iPads score and the iPhones score so you can see how big the disparity is between the scores.
Some of the tests have an equal score while with other tests the iPad more than doubles the iPhones score.
I agree with your thermal point. The thermal budget is not the same on an iPad, so I suspect a bit of thermal throttling or underclocked A14 on iPhone ?Woah those are pretty significant differences, you’d think it was two different SoCs.
Yeah, I think we’ll definitely have to wait for AnandTech to explain, something more is going on.
Maybe I miss something but beside the better lifespan of the phone, what is the benefit (=real use case) of A14 over A13 and even A12 ?
Let's exclude benchmark. Actullay I see a benefit only for very niche tasks (extracing big 4K60 video or other really intensive stuff, huge 3D games).
I think we can see a real perfomance difference between 2 consecutive gen of SoC only after the phone is at least 3 years old, don't you think ?
Only thing that comes to my mind:
Faster iOS Updates 😂
