The sound made when snapping the case shut is extremely hollow, tinny, and sharp sounding: like cheap plastic. AirPods Pro gen 1 have a nice solid SNAP when closing the case.

Feel the inside plastic of each generation's case, they are very clearly using a different type of plastic. A huge disappointment for the people that like to fidget with the case.

EDIT: before you comment the obvious, yes the title is kind of hyperbolic

EDIT: confirmed, If your lid is creaking, squeaking, and rattling that is NOT within spec and you should seek a replacement.

Mine are the same way. In fact, some times the hinge gets stuck and won't open or close. And it always catches a little bit. Pretty disappointed in the case.

First gen is much more solid!

Maybe it’s my fault but usually I listen the sound from the AirPods and not from the case 😁 anyway you have to test the Beats Fit Pro case… I’m using both The APP2 and the BFP, the Beats case feels like very very cheap Chinese product! It doesn’t even make a “snap” when closed.

My case lid also creaks when you wiggle it slightly. This feels like a Samsung or Sony product not like the bulletproof feeling of gen 1 APP. Very disappointed

Plastic does seem different. Not sure if it is as hyperbolically worse as described in the title though. Still seems sturdy enough to me.

Agree. Comparing side by side it seems like the APP2 plastic is a little less dense feeling. But that really says nothing about the quality of the plastic itself. There are thousands of kinds of plastics, each with unique qualities. It isn’t candy box liner plastic, that’s for sure.

Isn’t it obvious - there are two “H2” in the APP2; H2 Chip, & H2 where the “H” = Hinge.

On a serious note, seeing as Apple have included a lanyard clip, I would’ve thought the lid on the Gen 2 APP would he slightly harder to open, to prevent you losing your buds whilst the lanyard swings about.

I’m gonna go to the Apple Store and ask to look at a store model. Will probably end up returning them and exchanging. There is also a creaking sound.

Have the same problem. The top gets snagged and won’t open at times. Turns out i need to push the top back a little and it’ll open just fine. I’m not one to complain about these things but coming from apple, it feels like things these days are more rushed than ever and their attention to detail is slipping.

There have been several reddit threads in the /r/AirPods subforum as well as another MR thread talking about this issue. It seems like there's a genuine QC issue, not a change in plastic formulation. I will be exchaning/returning today. Just wanted to confirm that this is not some imaginary OCD placebo as some have suggested.

The plastic also feels cheaper, the edges where the two largest pieces of plastic meet feels rough (I can pick my finger nail against the interface). I don’t know how to describe it besides my first gen launch pro case and earbuds feel more premium.

A link to the appropriate spec would be helpful here.

It’s the spec of any sane person that doesn’t want their case to squeak and rattle every time they breathe on it.

Meanwhile, just exchanged mine at the store and the new case is a lot better. Not as good as my gen 1 but good enough.

Strangely enough, mine also has an issue where it kind of binds if I open it, and it sort of “snaps” open. Doesn’t feel good for it at all. Waiting to see if it resolves itself before I go to the trouble of getting a replacement.
