The "Available to ship: 7- 10 business days" group

Ok, so this is the first time since release of the original iPhone that I will not be receiving it on release day. I'm reaching out because I know there have been folks in the past in 7-10 day group. Based on the past, what can I expect? Has anyone originally had 7-10 that got bumped up to release day? I'm told that the phone will be delivered between Oct 1-6. Is this reliable? Is it typically earlier or later than the quoted dates?
