Hello,

I plan to take photos in the dark of the northern lights and I had taken make amazing ones before but I had used just my hand resting to get a good picture in the past. I have DJI osmo 5 but will upgrade to the 6.

Using a 14 pro max 1TB ( naked )

Looking for the best tripod I can get - money no object… should be sturdy and light weight.

Also the best mount for the phone

I have looked at manfroto so far.

Thanks

I got decent and fairly good pictures of the northern lights with a third party tripod. I believe that the most tripods fit the job. But a proper one like manfroto would surely suit. Together with a clip on mount or MagSafe mount it would do the job. The standard photo app will notice the phone is mounted on an tripod and give the possibility to take photos with a higher shutter time. 30 sec max instead of the 10 sec shuttertime

But keep in mind that you’ll see the limitations of the sensor. As in grainy photos. Also the cold (minus 10/15 C degree) can give some problems with exhausting the battery daily quickly as I experienced. Keep it warm inside your jacked when not used, helps a lot.

Same goes for pressing the shutter button (on screen). It makes the phone vibrate and gives moved photos. Self timer or activating with an Apple Watch is highly advisable.

Also think about gloves with touchscreen capabilities. Or inner gloves.

Next time I would bring a DSLR camera for better photos. But the iPhone is a nice start. Also don’t forget to enjoy. Not everybody has the luck to see the northern lights.

Added some photos taken with an iPhone 12 Pro.

Really Right Stuff make exceptionally high quality tripods. Their tripod heads are superlative and can be specced with quick release clamps.

They have a huge range from lightweight table top to full height carbon fibre capable of supporting DSLR’s with super-telephoto lenses.

They make an iPhone mounting solution as well.
