First of all, why in h*** did they use the theme song from "Saw" in their trailer. But that has nothing to do with what I was most concerned about. Alright I just watched this movie and I havn't the slightest idea what its about. Can someone please explain it? Here is my take - well it's not really a take just a bunch of jabber about the movie. - (please note these are what I took from it, I'm not saying it's correct) - I will highlight most important (to me) in red if you dont want to read it all.

- the dude makes the offer, and well, simply put, they take it
- obviously they begin to realize there are some consequences
- they begin to think - since he says the next person will NOT know them - that they will be the ones to die when *some other* people mash the button
- the husband starts investigating which pisses the old man off
- Apparently somehow the baby sitter is an employee of the old man or has something to do with everything
- I don't understand the NASA/Mars thing at all
- I don't understand how the lightening ties in with anything except thats
how the dudes face got jacked (somethign about when he got struck he is connected with *some other source* somehow??? I don't know.
- We start to realize by now that this dude is completely bad but you knew it would end up like that anyway
- What was the deal with all the staring people and "follower" people... I think they were employees but... so... idk what they had to do with it.
- At some point they talked about how he could be killed but that was it - and he is someone/thing in a old mans body? what?
- Why was NASA the ideal place for them to operate? What were they operating?
- What was the deal with the "tests"
- At one point I thought it was going to get religious and he was a form of "God"......
- And so what was the deal with the human extinction>>>?????

- What was the ENTIRE SCENE before they fall on the bed out of that "water capsle" about... I didnt get the book, or the movie she watched, or the scene with the old mans wife, and he had to pick 1 of 3 paths one was the way to eternity...he picked one and appeared back in his house..? Cameron Diaz was all compassionate to the old man about his face in that scene... How did that play in? The old man "showed him the afterlife" what for and again if he is bad then this doesnt make sense (the afterlife and the compassionate scenes)

omg. (<and I hate that term)

I think the movie was trying to show this:
Humans are greedy
Aliens (WHY ALIENS?) wanted to test/prove this
Aliens present 'needy' (re: cash strapped) humans with a choice:
You push the button, someone dies, you get $.
You don't push the button, nothing happens.
If enough people across the world push the button, the aliens (Martians?) step in and annihilate humanity, because of its propensity to be greedy and choose oneself over others.

That was essentially the theme, as far as I can tell. It was an interesting idea that was completely butchered by an altogether terribly unbelievable film. Cameron Diaz's accent was good while it lasted.
I'm going to read the short story if I can get my hands on it; I'm willing to bet it will be 1000% better than the film.
(Sorry for bumping the thread, I saw the title a week before watching the film and wanted to comment in it.)
EDIT- bizarre, I think you bumped right before I posted :D

When I read your post, I was like WTF, and then I went to IMDB to investigate. And found that the movie was written/directed by the director of Donnie Darko, and I was like oh. ;)

Kelly likes to make mind**** movies, so that's definitely no surprise. I added The Box to my Netflix queue (thanks for calling my attention to it). But Kelly can be hit or miss - Donnie Darko was awesome, but Southland Tales blew chunks.

I was going to call the obvious Darko shots/themes, yeah. At least it was the same director. Possibly trying to create one vaguely connected story arch?

They have an old version?
