The click wheel on my classic seems really unresponsive, sometimes not reacting to my thumb for a full turn, and it doesn't work from within those silicon cases (That the 5th gen iPods came with) like the 5th Gens did, I can't imagine that they would change the click wheel tech but it seems they did. Is this normal or is mine weird for some reason? Is it possible it just needs to be worked in (and will become more like my old 5th gen over use).

I haven't tried it through the felt carrying case but mine seems perfectly fine picks up everything other than those tiny freezes that tend to happen and give me a good scare every time.

Actually it could be the tiny freezes that make it miss turns on the wheel (Cause it usually happens when I pick it up not in the middle of using it), but it most definitely does not work within my little case.

The click wheel works by your thumb making an electrical contact between sections under the click wheel, so you need to have a case that allows the thumb to make the electrical contact, without creating an electrical contact between all the segments :S

There is an update out for the ipod classic that is supposed to reduce lag. That should help.

yeah the day i got my classic i was pissed cause the click wheel was as you said unresponsive, but somehow ive got the hang of it i guess and its working fine.

I noticed this too, and it was turning into the iPod not doing that fast scroll where it goes by letter because the turns were getting interrupted. I didn't know an update was released, let's hope this helps

I just synced my iPod and now am installing the update. Yeah, to be honest I'm not quite sure how to categorize what's wrong with the click wheel. It seems a little less responsive but performs better when I apply slight pressure to it as I scroll (my last two iPods i could just lightly glide my finger across the wheel with hardly any pressure) and the scrolls themselves aren't exactly as smooth as in the past.

EDIT: I tested the iPod out, this update helped immensely! The click wheel had perfect responsiveness for me and coverflow worked much more smoothly! Definitely install this update if you're having any issues, it seems like it will fix it. If you still have problems afterwards, there may be a hardware issue...

Yeah I have found that coverflow works really well on this new update, you just have to wait about 5 seconds after you open it for your HD to stop spinning then you start scrolling through it, if you start as soon as coverflow disappears its going to be still loading a lot of the covers.

And yeah this update really fixed a lot of my gripes about the click wheel, though it still doest work through that little case like the 5th gen. But hey you can't win them all.
