Recently, with iOS 14 and into 15, I have noticed that the expected behavior of tapping the Speaker icon when answering incoming calls on my iPhone 7 is no longer the default option. Instead, the Speaker button has been replaced by an Audio button that requires me to tap it and then tap the Speaker option in the list beneath it, which also lists my Mac as an audio source. This is quite inconvenient, as I do not want my Mac listed as an audio source when I'm on the go, or at all for that matter. The convenience of tapping the Speaker button once for speakerphone output and once to go back to the regular ear speaker is much more elegant.

Here are the things I have tried with no success to restore the previous Speaker button option:

On my iPhone under Settings / Phone / Calls on Other Devices - I turned off my Mac as an option under the "Allow Calls On" button and then turned off the "Allow Calls on Other Devices" button.

Next, I disabled the checkmark for "Calls from iPhone" within the FaceTime preferences on my Mac. And then disabled FaceTime by selecting "Turn FaceTime Off."

I have also disabled Handoff on the iPhone under Settings / General / AirPlay & Handoff - by switching the "Handoff" button to off. And on the Mac under System Preferences / General - the "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices" option is unchecked.

Hopefully, this thread can provide a useful reference for others searching the web to correct this problem as there doesn't seem to be a definitive solution posted elsewhere.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue, or is this just a case of Apple not correctly implementing a new feature in iOS?

It looks like iOS version 15.2 finally resolves this annoying bug. Monterey version 12.1 might also come into play. The key settings are to completely disable the "Allow Calls On" feature and also to disable "Handoff" on iPhone. Then Restart iPhone. The "Calls from iPhone" in FaceTime for Mac should be set to off as well.

UPDATE: After doing more testing, it appears that the Audio button reappears after some time has expired and the Speaker button can only be restored after Restarting the iPhone. It looks like this bug is still kicking around somewhere in the system.
