For about two weeks now I have been getting the dialogue button, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", that asks to initialize or ignore. Once I hit ignore, things are OK, but eventually the volume disconnects. It is an OWC external enclosure (Mercury Elite Pro Dual RAID Enclosure Kit) with two 4TB WD Blue drives in it. I have them set up as the RAID that mirrors; this is a storage device.

Since it can be seen/read, I backed it up, reformatted the drive(s), and restored the files. I'm still getting the "The disk you inserted..." dialogue.

This shouldn't be happening. I'm wondering if something is in the process of failing, but DriveDx reports a clean bill of health for the drive (see attachment). Could it be that one of the disks in the RAID is going, but the other one is generating the healthy status? Should I test them individually?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Best,
Luis

Edited to add: This is attached to my Mac Pro with Mojave installed.

I’m not 100% sure and still investigating, but on Mac Pro 5.1 - original macOS 10.14.6 - I’ve had some issues with my OWC Dual Pro RAID1 2x 1TB.

I lean towards to redirect and link these issues to the DriveDX application. It gives me issues when using Disk Utils at the same time or other SMART reading applications.

Keep you posted!

How did you setup your RAID-1 on your Mercury Elite Pro Dual RAID Enclosure Kit?

1. If you used AppleSoftRaid - Disk Utility - that may give you issues/errors.
2. I used the hardcoded RAID-1 on the controller itself (screw on the backside pointer facing RAID 1)
3. My unit is connected with eSATA cable (for me the most reliable connection) for fast bootable backups.

See noted in Model: Elite Pro Dual-R-1 in my screencap below.

My unit is a No/No yours a Yes/No. Please revise your setup and keep me posted about your issue. Perhaps we may have to ping OWC about this later.

- I also set the physical controller to set up RAID-1
- The problem only showed up AFTER I switched from eSata to USB 3
- USB 3 may be how Yes/No is arrived at... I know USB is hot-swappable. No/No would make sense if eSata is not hot-swappable.

OWC has yet to respond to a ticket I submitted last Wednesday. We did have a major holiday, so they are probably just now catching up on tickets...

I might have to try going back to eSata to see if resolves things. I had switched to USB 3 to see if there was speed benefit, but it really didn't seem to do anything.

That seems to have solved the issue—I rebooted a few times and didn't see the error... eSata seems to work best with my setup.

Also, the DriveDx report shows it as "No/No".

Thanks for your input, everyone!
