the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer

Yeah I came home from camping, turned on my macbook, plugged in my external 320gb hard-drive and got this message "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", firs time i've ever come across the message.

I'm currently 'repairing disk permissions' as i've found out this might work from other forums.

If not, how do I fix it? Cannot lose the data on this hard-drive.

Is there a free version? May be me being tired and feeling rough but cannot find a free version.

The hard-drive seems to be working totally fine on a windows laptop, weird.
