If only Apple had a vpn app integrated into MacOS, so we wouldn’t need to search around for it.

There are three options in Settings>Network for setting up a VPN connection in macOS. The VPN server to which you want to connect would need to provide support for one of those methods.

So…yeah…what app you use depends on the VPN to which you're connecting.

I leave my VPN icon in my dock so no need to search.

I believe there’s a way to use built in network settings to use a VPN but I don’t know how to do that.

Are you talking about Apple offering a VPN service? I have mixed feelings about that. While I think they’re more trustworthy than some VPN companies I wouldn’t put them on the top of my list

macOS has iCloud Private Relay has many VPN features, but only for Safari and Mail. It hides your browsing from your ISP and hides your IP address from web sites/servers.

All the consumer focused VPN providers are pretty easy to use. I use PIA when I need one. https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/. But there are many others, equally easy. I would not make any recommendation without knowing more about why you want to use VPN.
