Now that it looks like Apple/Orange will sell a genuine unlocked iPhone in France at the end of November albeit at a possible high price what's the chances of someone buying one and doing a comparison on how the phone is running unlocked and either copying this method or providing a way to copy the whole software for flashing to a currently locked iphone?

Good question, and there is a strong chance it might work, this has been asked before, and no one knows yet.

It depends on what apple change to enable the unlock - could include a special chip, to avoid what you are suggesting. In which case a simple copy would not work.

The great thing about officially unlocked iPhones is that they will always be compatible with updates. Lets hope other iPhones can be unlocked in the same way!
