Here's what I feel the future holds.
Obviously Apple has to release the 3rd Gen iPod Touch somewhat soon with upgraded specs that will support OpenGL ES 2.0... since they do market the iPod touch as a gaming device, they are obviously going to want to have support for that.
Next year we'll probably see the release of iPhone OS 4.0 and the next iPhone. But what will they have? I can't really see anything new hardware-wise that they could incorporate in the new phone, so we'll probably just see the specs boosted all around, including having a multi-core processor.
But I think iPhone OS 4.0 will finally support multiple apps being open at once. Push is a good substitute for a sizable percentage of apps, but it would be really nice if we could be streaming pandora, playing a game, reply to a text message, and return to the game with no problems. Granted this would hurt battery life, but I think Apple has to give in to this, as I think we're going to see more people switching to the Pre or the many Android devices that will be coming out, just because of their ability to multi-task. And of course only the 4th Gen iPhone will support multiple apps being open, because older iPhones couldn't support it, just as the current iPhones couldn't support voice control or video recording and the first Gen iPhone can't support MMS. They have the hardware and are perfectly capable, Apple just wants you to spend money to get the latest and greatest, as they don't directly profit at all from a software update.
iPhone OS 4.0 will probably add a bunch of APIs, but I can't really think of anything major it could really provide other then multi-tasking.
The year after that, 2011 will be a big year. For one, AT&Ts exclusive hold on the iPhone will be up. For two, carriers are supposed to be rolling out their 4G LTE networks, which the 2011 iPhone will support. Will this mean we'll see a Verizon iPhone? I honestly have no clue, as this is where it starts getting fuzzy, as its just too far into the future. iPhone OS 5.0? I honestly have no idea what they could do to add upon the OS to make it better, if we make the assumption the background apps have already been allowed by 4.0.
Well this about sums up what I think is going to happen, what are your thoughts on the future?
