I don't know if anyone has figured this out, but I've discovered that, using the new GarageBand ringtone making feature, it's easy to just import an iTunes Plus track into GarageBand, cut it down then export it to iTunes as a ringtone. A great way to save 99¢, and a great way to make ringtones out of songs not available as ringtones.

This has been much-discussed in here. It came about at the last firmware update, which allowed any sound file to be made a ringtone by simply renaming the ".m4a" extension to be ".m4r".
