Shouldn't we start something like that, to stay on-topic elsewhere ... ?

I don't know, I think we do a pretty good job here of staying on topic. Not perfect, but nothing ever is.

There are problems with having a dedicated off-topic thread:
  • It would have to be stickied, or no one would ever find it.
  • Even if it was stickied, people would ignore it, especially new visitors.
  • Policing it would be problematic:
    • Who decides what's "off topic"? The OP? People replying? The mods?
    • Pointing out that something is off-topic generates even more discussion that's off-topic.
  • It's not a very friendly way to treat people who stumble in here unaware of our local rules.
  • It's going to discourage discussion... I for one have learned a lot from threads that have taken off-topic tangents, and wouldn't want people who otherwise might have shared something interesting, to refrain from doing so because someone else may try to banish them to "off-topic land".
Finally, there are other areas of the forum that are geared toward discussion of just about anything, and people can go there if they want to discuss something not relevant to PPC. But I like to talk to the people here, and if something just comes up in conversation here, I like the freedom to follow that wherever it leads. That's my two cents.

Maybe you're right. I do like it too, whenever a thread rambles on to new ideas and perspectives, but I also wish, the latest unhappy discussion rather would have taken place somewhere in "Speakers' Corner" ...

Yeah, I get you. Maybe we could have a dedicated angry argument thread. Call it, "PPC Cage Death Match." Two members enter, one member leaves

One of the upsides to arguing is that issues can oftentimes be resolved and personal improvements can be made as a result. That said, I wonder if we should continue where we were getting at here (as this thread was made with the purpose of off-topicness in mind), seeing as how the previous discussion was canned?

Just a simple, perhaps uselessly optimistic idea...

Just thinking that this topic is likely to get canned, because as far as the mods are concerned, it's not about PowerPC Macs - not even tangentially.

Ups, then let this go down the Orcus ... maybe it's for the best.
BTW I don't understand the pattern, how "off-topic" stuff is selected and deleted.

The mods relate what we post about to the original questions asked.

If I ask you about how to install Tiger and two other members enter a discussion about Youtube on a G3 Mac then that's off-topic. Stuff like that.

It's all got to relate back to the OP.
Sure, I get that. That's how it's supposed to work. But I've seen a fair bit, just in this forum, of things not happening that way. I usually can understand why they removed a post, what I have trouble understanding is the stuff they choose to leave behind.

But a mod's job must be a difficult one. Reminds me of the referees at various sporting events I used to work. We had to escort them to their cars after the game to protect them from disagreeable fans. Can't please everybody.

It's inconsistent, yeah I know. But the mods are usually on triage. They tend to clean up the stuff that was reported or the sharper posts. They have a lot of other areas on the forum and our place is kind of out of the way. I would assume too that they know that our community tends to try and police itself as well.

Aside from that, they're still human.

In any case, all of this is one of the reasons when I get off-topic I tend to try and attach PowerPC Macs to it at some point. :)

EDIT: This is why when an argument ensues you will often see me either ignoring it, making middle of the road posts or trying to get people to make up. Becoming part of that (one side or the other) is when you get moderated. Not that I don't have an opinion on any given subject, but I also just want to try and get along with everyone even if I don't always agree with them.

Like anything else here though (MacRumors on the whole) I do use my Ignore list.

Oh, and I've been moderated for making THAT statement too! ;)

I've got the old refrigerator that says it's a Frigidaire made by GM.

It's a really cool old fridge, as a matter of fact, too cool, as it freezes the food outside of the icebox.

Anyone ever fix one of these things?

Thermostat?

Where can I get one and how do I install it?

🤣

You should go and buy ice-cream instead of salad!
Or put an Apple Powerbook inside: "Hell freezes over"? - naah "Frost gets burnings..."! 🤣

So, the idea of this thread takes more and more shape in my mind:
Speakers-Corner! Stand onto the Apple box and start talking, arguing, shouting ... without getting banned.

BTW: @bunnspecial should'd be banned anymore ...

It is a fast & easily explained tool in the moderator tool book to can heated discussions without nipping participants with annoying bans nor in-depth explanations that never go well.

It’s effectively a moderator softskill.

My opinion of course, but that is exactly how I would employ it. In that way uncomfortable content can be managed while maintaining a vibrant community Of participants without shutting everyone up out of fear Outright. Never perfect but Yanno what is.

Funny enough, I have an early 50s Frigidaire in my office at work with the exact same problem.

I don't have a clear-cut answer. Basically I'll bring a softdrink or something in to put in it that I intend to drink that day, but leaving one overnight is a sure way to a mess.

We have someone at work who is pretty sharp with this sort of stuff, and I've asked him to look at it but he hasn't gotten around to it yet. I hope he can soon, as I'd like to be able to use it normally.

One other thing to consider, though...the door gasket on mine is pretty badly dry rotted and I'm not sure it seals well. I've been told that poor sealing can make it run too much(I can hear it cycle on and off, so it doesn't run continuously) but won't let it correctly set the temperature. Replacement gaskets can usually be found with some sleuthing, although I've meant to try a smear of grease around it to see if that helps before throwing that at it.

I hope I can find an answer, though.
