whats the deal with the glass back on the new iPhone? why do you guys think its there for? lets hear your thoughts...

The glass/ceramic back is to improve signal quality (including radio I think) and prevent scratches I believe. I remember reading about it somewhere a while ago so I'm not 100% sure but that's the basics of it.

They wanted a material that wouldn't block RF like metal, but that would feel more solid/expensive/"premium" than plastic?

That would be my best guess. Unless there's going to be some sort of touch interface on the back as well, I don't know what it could be used for.

The touch interface has me thinking about something like the Moto Backflip.

Ceramic-based materials are highly scratch-proof. So this is a change for good. Regardless though, I will still get some nice (probably silicon) skin for it.

touch interface? how would anything like that work?

i think its gonna be some kind of hybrid material, i hope it improves cell signal but still protects the phone

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I believe as others have said, that it was made this way, to improve the signal quality.

No doubt it strengthens signal reception, which hopefully will decrease the load on the battery.

I doubt the rumors of the back being touch sensitive are true, although it is highly possible.

If they make the back casing touch sensitive for anything important then they will be potentially killing the iPhone case market as a case would then cover some of the controls. Having said that, the reason I still think it's possible, although highly doubtful, is they could always make it touch sensitive, but the controls are not for necessarily important tasks, ie finger swipe to change tracks etc, and hence only people that want to use them need to.

If the back does anything to improve the cell signal I've been having to deal with at home for the last few months, it could be made out of buffalo dung and I'd be happy. :)
