The hard drive i want to back up keeps showing on the exclusion list in Time Machine?

I have a newly formatted drive that I'm trying to setup for Time Machine. In the preferences, for what to Exclude, the hard drive of my Macbook Pro is showing up, and it is greyed out so I can't remove it from the exclusion list. I formatted my external drive twice to see if that made a difference and it didnt. Any ideas?

Did you use the correct format when formatting the disk? Is the Partition Map set to GUID? (According to Apple, if you use MBR, "some partitions might not be available for use with Time Machine".)
