the ring is magnetic. it can hold a paperclip

this means that the patent that was reported back in jan 2014 about the new iPhone having a ring that protrudes is true. this ring is either used to keep the lens steady, or it might be true that they made this ring for future snap on after market camera lenses.

so if anybody asks why your camera sticks out, this is why!
 
Umm nah, they could've done that whilst being flush

yeah. its a nitpick. but i can imagine it would be easier for camera lenses to clip on and retain and stick to the iPhone with a ring that sticks out slightly then one that is flush
