do i have to keep this on my mac? it's the restore file for 5.0.1 (in Home>Library>iTunes>iPhone Software Updates).

almost 800 megs. can i store it on an external, and move it back IF i need to restore??

You can delete it. If its needed again, iTunes will download another copy.
