It has been on the collar... a year and a half maybe? Whenever Apple first released. BIG dog with lots of energy. Forgot to remove it a few times before swimming. Cleaned the contacts well with alcohol, but lately it seems to give the little chirp of inserting a new battery out of the blue maybe once a day, and when a lot of people on this site started complaining of low battery warnings (and removal of battery status icon), this AirTag started throwing them too, even with a fresh battery.

I think this iTag is probably on the way out, so a new one is on the way, though I still wonder if the actual problem is a messed up firmware update, since this started simultaneously with so many issues reported by others in the same time frame.

You are probably referring to an AirTag - you do not need a new one, you can just change the battery, the time interval you mention seems about right to do so.
