The letter 'U' inserted in text messages

Whenever I receive a text message on my new 3G iPhone, the letter U is shown in between the message and the signature. For example:

Hey Mike hows it going?U-Chris

when it used to look like this on my old iPhone:

Hey Mike hows it going? -Chris

I've only noticed this problem with people texting me from Verizon phones. I don't know anyone with AT&T or other services that have signatures to try it out. Has anyone else seen this issue?
