So, according to the Tech Specs page of the new Mac mini M4, the dimensions are:

Height: 2.0 inches (5.0 cm)

Width: 5.0 inches (12.7 cm)

Depth: 5.0 inches (12.7 cm)

The original Mac mini, from 2005, with the G4 chip, was:

Height: 2 inches (5.08 cm)

Width: 6.5 inches (16.51 cm)

Depth: 6.5 inches (16.51 cm)

It's interesting to see a return to the height we got away from for the last 14 years! This height does include the foot stand, so they should sit alongside each other, but the foot will make the M4 appear "thinner" probably. I hope someone who buys the new one can share some photos of how they look alongside the G4 or early Intel Mac mini if they have one too. :)

With the education credit you can add something like this I/o mini base . If I ever pick up a new desktop Mac, it would probably be a mini with something like that to expand I/o options. With the closest studio option at 2k, the mini is a very enticing option.

That port expander is gonna look pretty big on the new mini :p

What about a return to the original’s price of 499 bucks?
I mean, we got it!

It's pretty cool that there is still a very capable Mini for $499 with the (widely available) education pricing.

That's loads cheaper than it used to be - 19 years of an inflation is a lot! $499 in 2005 is the equivalent of about $805 today. By Apple's standards, this is really pretty good value.

You caught that too? I didn't think it had the same height, but I automatically thought G4 Mac mini when I saw the debut. Granted, it is not the same style enclosure, but it sure felt like a time warp. Kind of like the new M4 iMacs.

Not in the UK. The system is far more rigorous here.
Haha that's unfortunate. In the Netherlands there's no online check. Just make sure you don't pick it up at a local Apple Store. Overly attentive store employees will ask for a student ID (as a friend of mine found out the hard way lol).

Actually $499 in 2005 is equivalent to about $800 now adjusted for inflation.
Sometimes people (myself included) forget 2005 is already close to 20 years ago. 🥲

... Although the devious will able to identify obvious workarounds. ;)

Years ago (2011) you used to be able to order from the Apple Store over the phone in the UK. You could tell any kind of story as long as it was convincing enough.

I have a good friend in the Netherlands. I'll keep this in mind in case I ever relent and opt for a Silicon Mac. She could bring it to London for me via the Eurostar. (Yep, got it all worked out!) :D

Such a shame that I missed out on the opportunity to put my silver-tongued devilry to good use. :(

Man, I want both the new mini and the original G4 mini. The G4 mini was the first computer I bought brand new from Apple. The only reason I sold it was during a time of my life when I was out of work and desperately needed money to keep my family afloat. I miss that machine.
