On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss Apple's recently announced "It's Glowtime" event for September 9 and what we're expecting from this year's M4 Mac models.

Apple this week sent out invitations for the "It's Glowtime" event that it is set to host on Monday, September 9. It is highly likely to unveil the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple Watch SE 3, and AirPods 4. We take a look at the event invite that clearly hints at Apple Intelligence's prominent presence at the event and weigh up what sort of role it could play in each of the devices that are set to be revealed.

We also look at the upcoming M4 Mac models expected to launch this year: an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip, new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, a new iMac with the M4 chip, and a completely redesigned Mac mini with the M4 and M4 Pro chips. With the exception of the new Mac mini, these devices are expected to be minor refreshes that focus on chip upgrades, but they could come with 16GB of memory as standard across the board for the first time. Some of these machines are now believed to be in mass production, so while they probably won't be announced at Apple's "Glowtime" event, launch is likely to take place soon.

Any news director or PR executive will tell you. Don't release good news on a political day because it will be over shadowed. It's communication 101. Go back the last 30 years and find product release presentations that have been scheduled the day before or after scheduled political announcements. It's a big deal.

Would be nice to have M4 MacBooks. But knowing Tim Apple, dude will charge $2k for the base model (with 16GB ram) so the only option below will be the M3.

Why can’t they improve the GPU? Even the M1 cpu is enough for intensive tasks. But the GPU for gaming is bad. Even in Pro and Max M3 models can’t handle AAA titles in lowest settings at 30fps.

Well, just got my M3 Pro 16" 36/1TB (bought it on the right side of the fiscal year ending tomorrow so I couldn't hold out). For my workload (software developer, running many Dockers and IDEs) I can't see much improvements from my MBP 16" M1 Pro (2021 model) 32/512GB machine when it comes to building docker images or compiling. However, the old machine was dying from broken keyboard (despite me using it with external keyboard 85% of the time during the years!) and battery-life deteriorating so I had to take the leap.

Many people talk about this potential new 16Gb of memory standard for the MacBook Pro, but we seem to forget that the actual M3 Pro comes with 18Gb of memory before any upgrade.

Does this mean that we should expect a 36Gb memory standard on the MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro chip?

I believe these new MacBooks will be announced after the "back to school special".

Maxing out a current M2 Pro mini with processor, RAM, and HDD upgrades to my "minimal" requirements brings it to within just a few shekels of a much more potent Studio with a Max processor, much better graphics support, more RAM availability, etc. While I would love to see a new M4 Pro mini that exceeds my expectations, I'm likely going to have to wait another 6-9 months until an M4 Max Studio upgrade...or the 27-32" iMac Unicorn is released.

Me too I believe Macs will be announced after Back to School offer, which ends on October 21

This is shaping up to be a really boring event. Most info on the new iPhones is out there, AI features known from the betas and won't be release at event time. The Apple Watch 10 could be of some interest if rumoured changes happen and that's it. Boring event maybe the October event will be more interest for the new M4 Macs.

It's time for a reset. There was a time when both of these fellows were each able to speak without being interrupted - and - they each spoke equal lengths of time. I miss that.

And by the way it was suggested that we all try out the Google photo editing feature because it's better than Apple's. Is Google the show's new sponsor?

Can't stand it when others are better than Apple?

Why don't you be happy that MacRumors no longer consists of biased fanboys, but reports more objectively about the company?
After all, it should be in your interest as an Apple user that the company does not become lazy, but instead continues to improve or at least remains good with competition.

It’s not that Apple has a ‘bad’ or poorly performing GPU: it’s actually a very good architecture from a design PoV. The problem is simply that it doesn’t use a cross-platform approach that complies with the common denominator developmeant platforms. If you’re using an application which is written natively for the Apple Silicon GPU, it flies. One of the biggest limiting factors in the penetration of the Mac in AI is Apple’s falling out with NVIDIA where, like most others, we do our rendering in CUDA under Linux, with the Macs as the front-end systems.

"Athens signaled their virtues and murdered Socrates."
Interesting choice.
[Off topic]:

My dad, working at the World Bank in the 1960's in the Kongo, convinced a firing squad of chronically unpaid soldiers not to shoot him by telling them Socrates' story - finishing with "and 2000 years later, people still point to that and say it was wrong!" ...

That Tim Apple comment is some funny sh*t 🤣🤣 that’ll never not be funny!
Honestly I’m looking to upgrade to a MB air maybe and I’m wondering how long can Apple realistically offer 8GB base model. I have a 2012 Mac mini that came with 8GB of memory. So 12 years later apple is still offering the same base memory. I never buy the base model I’m more middle of the line but an extra $200 for 16. That’s BS & 256 GB ssd is BS too. IMO

I just started my own coding projects. It is tempting to upgrade, but M1 Max 64 Gb is just fine. Anyway, the 2t hard drive is too small for my purposes and the only real reason to even think spending 8k (company money)

We have different choices from now on, on our Macs, with additional costs of course.
Disco glow, Disco Puls, Normal glow and Super glow.

Sure, we’ll get that from Tim Cook, not a chance.
If he gives us anything it’s dark grey, middle gray and light grey.
