Luke's brilliant , also so nice to be able to clearly understand someone speaking , so many either mumble or rush

Luke Miani used to bully me in Middle School. In 2007 he would make fun of my 2006 Core Duo white MacBook because he had the new 2007 Core 2 Duo MacBook in black.

Years later at a reunion he brought it up again and asked what laptop I use nowadays. I pulled out my M1 MacBook Air which got the attention of a lot of eyes at the party. But, some things never change.... to my surprise he just sort of smirked and said,"That's cute" while he pulled out the Midnight M2 MacBook Air. There were gasps from every direction as my self esteem shrank once again to nothing, all thanks to Luke Miani.

So yeah, besides my PTSD triggering panic attacks throughout, this was a great show. MacRumors has a very great content team and I enjoy listening. Thanks guys.

I am really enjoying the podcast episodes. Forum reading is one thing but hearing is even better. 👍👍

I find some of his videos to be well done and informative, but he often lowers himself to clickbait titles like a putz.

Good podcast so far. I've paused it to address a coupe of points:

(1) As for the temperature measurement, as I understand it, the Watch 8 determines a base reference and then displays temperature increases or decreases in degrees from reference. The Oura Ring I bought to address sleep problems provides that as a feature. I had a cold back in March, when I scroll back in time to mid March, the bar chart shows a full 7 days of elevated temperature (~+1.6º above reference for 4 days then sliding down to ~+1.0º for the next three days). So yes, assuming it works the way my ring works, It is a good monitor for level of wellness.

(2) The stainless steel Apple Watch is jewelry, the aluminum watch is utility - and looks it. To some of us it's worth that ripoff SS price increase (although, in all fairness, it does include a sapphire crystal and LTE) to get away from that utility look - while still experiencing that utility function.

Unfortunately the sad reality is videos with clickbait titles tend to do a lot better with the YouTube algorithm. I don’t mind them as long as the video itself is well made and informative. Creators needed to eat too.

Who brings their laptop to a party? 😆

I go back and forth on how genuine Miani is. Sometimes his stuff seems genuine and valuable, other times it's clear he is stroking the algorithm or Apple ego for all it's worth. There were a few videos where he did some cleanups and upgrades of older, but still serviceable Macs that were great, but then he got into the "I bought a box of 105 MacBooks that were run over by a train and then tossed in the local flood control channel. How many can I low effort get booting?" fad and lost me a bit.

Miani brought the inspirations of used MacBooks to me and I got one 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro because of that.
Yeah, me too - those 2012 15" models are great. Too bad I could only score a low-res screen version, not the high-res one, for my Mac collection. Nevertheless, they're still great, apart from the pixelizated screen.

EDIT: his informative videos on old Macs are great. It helped me a lot when choosing a 17" and a 13" MBP model too. (For a 17", I finally went for a late 2011 model with already-disabled GPU. No external monitor support, but it doesn't matter as those 1920x1200 screens are pretty good (not that pixelizated), even by today's standards.)

BTW, Miani is clearly a MUCH better choice to feature in your podcasts than iJustine or Rene Ritchie. He's knowledgeable, sincere and credible, unlike those other two. Hope you'll invite him in the future too.

I bet the inconsistency in battery claims on the website are due to the A16 GPU having better efficiency for video acceleration, while the Plus probably lasts longer for general use.

I don’t agree with the watch segment.. the trend in watches is to go smaller, even for men (look at the new Tudor watches).
So the fact that Apple is going the complete opposite shows that they’re only targeting a very specific group of people.

The Ultra isn’t aimed at the same audience as the stainless steel. Stainless Steel owners want to take advantage of the sapphire screen, they want to be able to wear nicer bands (the Milanese looks horrendous with the aluminum models, looks tacky and cheap). The stainless for many people is a fashion accessory. They also feel and weigh more like an actual watch, not like some Fitbit strapped to your wrist.

Aluminum = cheapest model, the “mainstream” model, the “everyone and your grandma has it” model, for people who don’t really care about fashion, a device you wear to the gym. The silicone bands look wonderful on them and I think it’s amazing that everyone can enjoy the same features on the cheaper models as those who spend more on the SS (minus the sapphire screen and steel build).

Stainless = people who care a bit more about fashion and are willing to splurge for a more refined look. Cares about rotating bands (every single one looks great on the SS models, not a single one feels “out of place”). Probably enjoys traditional watches or the “feel” of a traditional watch. Looks beautiful on women, especially when it matches their jewelry. Looks professional in the workplace. Oh and not to mention that you can always have your stainless steel watch polished, and it’ll look like it did on day one. Try doing that with the aluminum model.

Ultra = those who wanted a Garmin but didn’t wanna leave the Apple ecosystem, people who genuinely hike, dives and does extreme sports. Maybe surfers will get a good use out of this, or golfers or people who do sports for a long period of time.

There’s also no way in heck the Ultra is gonna look flattering on a woman with small wrists. It’s gonna look dumb. Sure, wear it while you do a triathlon but maybe consider getting a second watch for day to day.

Yeah, those were some bizarre anecdotes during the Watch segment. There is a super obvious difference between the dull/matte look of the aluminum and the shiny.glossy look for the stainless steel. And no offense to Luke, but it sounds like your friend is just a slob.

All that said, I would never buy the SS watch either but I do think it looks a hell of a lot better than the aluminum or ultra watch.
