On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss Apple's new iPad Air and iPad Pro models, the latest rumors about an all new iPhone 17 "Slim" model, and the newly announced Sonos Ace over-ear headphones.

We talk through first impressions of the new iPad Air and iPad Pro models, including their pricing and the state of the iPad lineup as a whole, giving attention to the reduced price of the tenth-generation iPad, which now costs just $349, which is $250 less than the starting price of the iPad Air.

We also examine the recent wave of rumors about the iPhone 17 "Slim," an all-new iPhone model expected to sit above the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max in Apple's 2025 smartphone lineup with a higher price tag. The device will reportedly feature a 6.55-inch display, a significantly thinner design with an aluminum chassis, an "A19" chip, 8GB of RAM, a rear camera array relocated to the center, a 24-megapixel front camera, and a 48-megapixel telephoto camera. Simultaneously, Apple is expected to discontinue its "Plus" model to make way for the "Slim," although it may not actually be called this when it debuts in the fall of next year.

Meanwhile, Sonos just announced its "Ace" over-ear headphones with active noise cancelation, soundbar integration, a more lightweight design, and longer battery life, so we look at how they compare to the AirPods Max. Pimpin' selling iPhones aint easy

iPhone Slim...he's a baaaaad....shut your mouth

Why already talk about the iPhone 17 when even the iPhone 16 isn’t launched? We already know it wil have the same form factor as the iPhone 15, 14, 13, 12. Some incremental hardware updates here and there and probably $ 100,- more expensive than the one it will be “replacing”. 120 hz refresh rates are standard these days at even entry level phones. Apple will probably keep that for the “pro” versions in the foreseeable future.

I'm going to skip 17 and 18, I hear the 19 will be the best iPhone at that particlar point in time. It should also come with a faster processor and improved camera. Yes I sound like a professional analyst, but I really am untrained and am just an enthusiast.
I'm going to skip the iPhone 17, 18 and 19. Rumors say the iPhone 20 will be portless, have no buttons, not even a modem that let's you connect to WiFi or a carrier, because they will sell it as an optional accessory. 😂🤣

The disposition of the cameras in all this mockups doesn’t align well with the new iPhone 16 adopting a vertical camera layout in order to be able to record 3D Video, or Spatial Video, or however that format is commercially named.

iPhone Slim makes literally no sense, at least that fake "iPhone Ultra" which never happened was believable.
According to that rumor, it is slimmer (worse battery life + easier to bend) and uses worse materials while being the most expensive iPhone + they rearrange camera system a year after redesigning base models to support Spatial.

I hear they are shipping the phones in paper bags to save the planet by reducing box costs.

That's just a poor interpretation.

iPhone Slim and iPhone Ultra are the same product. Just different sources for the same rumor from different perspectives.

One look at the design achievements of the new iPad Pro tell you everything you need to know. "worse materials" and "easier to bend" are laughable. What Apple achieved with the iPad Pro in terms of thinness and weight and strength all at the same time is incredible.

iPhone "Slim", which most definitely is a nickname for the design goals, will feature the same new aluminum central rib design as the new iPad Pro to enable a thinner and lighter design, will use denser batteries to maintain the same battery life as a current Pro model, and have redesigned rear camera modules and a smaller dynamic island. And of course, and all new price point.

No two vertical cameras for spatial videos? And only 8pm of ram?

Sounds like this slim phone will not be focusing on spatial videos at least.

Agreed. Seeing what Apple was able to achieve with the M4 iPad Pro will undoubtedly translate to other devices. There is typically a segment of the population that wants, and can afford, to buy a more premium version of just about every product, so why not offer versions that fit this segment in iPhones, iPads (M4 iPP nano), MacBooks, AirPods, Watch (Ultra was exactly this), etc.

It will be called iPhone Air and it will be thin and light without camera bump. It will target the segment that cares more about esthetics and premium look/feel rather than power and camera.

Lol you are comparing an imaginary phone to a "13 inch tablet", nobody is going to put that iPad pro in their back pocket so there is usually no concern about bending a 'tablet' in the first place. Even if there were, the new iPad Pro bends as easily as it did vertically before, and it's only 0.4mm thinner than Samsung's 2023 tablet, maybe it's incredible in terms of thinness to the old iPad, certainly nothing special compared to competition in this category.
Aluminum is considered worse/cheaper material compared to Titanium, no matter how you interpret it, and ofc you are still comparing a tablet to a phone while they have completely different use case scenarios. A thinner device is more susceptible to bending, especially ones that are small and can be put in a pocket, unlike an iPad.

So this new premium “iPhone 17 Slim” will be thinner, have the cameras centered at the top so people know you don’t have a 13/14/15/16 Pro and probably start at a price of $1,299 (256GB). Meanwhile the iPhone 17 Pro becomes the iPhone 8. Apple could’ve just “redesigned” the 17 Pro and bump up the price by $100, but that’s not how Tim thinks.

How about you keep buying the gargantuan brick iPhones and let us iPhone Slim users worry about bending. They are only going to offer it as an option—the main iPhone will remain as thick as ever. So what are you on about if you’re not interested in buying one?

I will gladly assume the risk of my iPhone Slim or Ultra or whatever bending more easily.
