On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we discuss Apple's potential March event to unveil new iPad and Mac models, iOS 18 as the "biggest" ever iPhone software update, and the first reviews of the Vision Pro headset.

We explore the major products Apple is expected to unveil in March, including a new 12.9-inch iPad Air model, redesigned iPad Pros with OLED displays, and refreshed MacBook Air models featuring the M3 chip, as well as some of the rumored accessories due to arrive at the same time, such as an all-new, "laptop-like" Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro. We consider whether Apple will opt for a fully fledged event, or a simple series of press releases to announce these updates. We also discuss iOS 18, musing about some of the potential redesigns and improvements that could be in store for the software update.

Following the release of the first reviews of Apple's Vision Pro headset, we dissect the varying reactions to the device, examining its form factor, user experience, and the unique approach Apple has taken to mitigate the traditionally insular experience of VR/AR headsets. We address some of the limitations currently faced by headsets, such as the absence of a direct touch experience, the market's apparent skepticism towards the device, and where it could go next.

I feel that Vision Pro is a solution trying to find a problem. Yet, it is possibly the best designed solution available today.

Maybe this will change as we get more information and Apple updates the software and the hardware? Maybe?

I haven't noticed that it has been that long. 2018 since the last iPad Pro design update! Geez… Lost track of time. Maybe Apple think that is the best design form for the iPad? Just a wild guess.
Love @Dan Barbera's WHYYYYY
iOS 18: Let's hope for the best
AVP: Still can't see myself wearing that on my head LOL

For me personally it’s going to be a work device. The more screen real estate I can get the more efficient I can be. It’s a replacement for monitors in that aspect.

For rest it’s just fun and cool experience to use. It’s like when we went from 2d side scrolling video games to 3D video games. We are just going to experience everything differently than we have.

@30:00 — On Control Center I'd love for AirPods Pro settings (Off / Noice cancellation / Transparency) to be easier to access. Also connecting to BT devices should be easier to access.

I use both functions all the time.

@50:00-ish...

Dan, just get into Beat Saber on your Quest.
Or hook it up to a PC for Half-Life Alyx and Star Wars Squadrons.
Have you tried any of those games?

Star Wars Squadrons VR on Quest

I’m hoping for one more “less” expensive iPad mini before it becomes OLED. And iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, that is inclusive AI-wise back to 2018. At least.

Do people really want more and more things on their phones?

I'm with David Lewis in thinking about these phones:

iOS 18 will do nothing for me.

I think that is a good way to describe it. You could also say that the Vision Pro is a technology showcase of what is possible for AR/VR with today's technology.

At the end of the day, AR/VR has been around for awhile and no one has been able to figure out what killer feature would make everyone want to buy one like an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, etc.

What feature can make someone consciously put this on their heads with all the inherent downsides such as weight (which can be addressed in the future) and limited battery life (can be extended but still an obstacle).

I will be testing one soon. I imagine it is very technically impressive but have a hard time seeing how it would slot into one's workflow unless there job is to make online reviews.

Hi Guys,
I think you are missing the point with Vision Pro a who the initial users will be.
1. Will be business users that can do sensitive work where ever they are with out praying eyes
2. Finally a head set where you can create advanced business applications like for architects and their clients, developers that need multiple monitors even at a café, a more immersive experience being in video meetings etc
3. The number of households in larger cities around the world that are singles is approximately 50% and for one of those not needing to buy a TV or monitors could be a game changer.

so I don’t think that it will compete with the existing game head sets for normal gaming even if it will excel there too and therefore the term visual computing is not so bad after all

The problem is that we have to have devices to go online.

The endgame to have a solution that we can bridge both worlds without needing an external device.

Vision pro is the first try to do that. It'll get smaller and smaller, translucent until it becomes something like a contact lens in 30 years.

What's the color code of that car paint? What's the name of this sneaker, where can I but it cheapest? Which building is 182 Broadway Ave Building C? --> All shown as overlay to the real world that we see through our eyes, without needing to look for it over a device.

Vision Pro is what would be a validation prototype of an iPhone in 1990 or IBM 1620 of the original Macintosh.

When in March do you believe the updates could be unveiled? Is there any way of gauging or does it get announced out of thin air one day?

Sort of funny to have this thread ... and the one titled "iOS 17 Adoption is Slower Than iOS 16 Adoption" on the same day.

People are worn out

Apple - stop the annual releases and "new versions" for no reason

How about adding things and fixing things to existing versions over a 2-3 year time frame?
