On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we talk through some of the key aspects rumored for watchOS 10's substantial UI redesign.

Last week, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that watchOS 10 will introduce an all-new system of widgets for interacting with the Apple Watch. He explained that widgets will become a "central part" of the Apple Watch's interface and compared the new system to Glances, the widgets interface that launched on the original Apple Watch before being scrapped in watchOS 3, and the style of widgets that iOS 14 brought to the iPhone.

Apple is also apparently testing changes to the functions performed by the Apple Watch's buttons. For example, a press of the Digital Crown may now launch the new widgets view, rather than navigate to the home screen.

The new interface will apparently be "reminiscent" of the ‌Siri‌ watch face that was introduced in watchOS 4, but as an overlay for any Apple Watch face. "It's also similar to widget stacks, a feature in iOS and iPadOS that lets users pile many widgets into one and scroll through them," Gurman added.

There are also rumors about watchOS 10 introducing a new home screen layout that takes cues from iOS with features like app folders. The changes are part of what is expected to be one of the Apple Watch's biggest software updates since its introduction and the most significant change to the Apple Watch this year, as only minor hardware updates are expected to be unveiled later this year.

We consider how this new UI could take shape and how we feel about the proposed changes, reflecting on Glances, watchOS 4's Siri watch face, past changes to the Apple Watch's buttons, and the future of apps on the device.

We also discuss some of the latest Apple news, including the expansion of AirTag-like tracking alerts to third-party devices, iOS 17's rumored Wallet and Health app redesigns, and the delay of the microLED Apple Watch Ultra to 2025.

I have to wonder how Apple's sales on watches have been in the last year compared to previous years? I seem to have lost interest and gone back to wearing my mechanical automatic watch again (and don’t have to deal with charging a watch anymore).

No reason to change my S6 for a “newer” watch, they are not “upgrades”.
I wear my mechanical in the left and my disposable gadget (with dwindling functionality every year) on the right.
Less and less support from developers. Quickky becoming a boring gadget. The big novelty is “titanium frame” in a disposable gadget, ha!.

In December I opted to get a battery replacement for $79 for my aging and quickly draining Apple Watch Series 4 rather than upgrade. While my AWS4 doesn't do all the hardware things, no always on display, or some other things that the later models do, for the $79 I was able to get a new watch (they replace it instead of changing the battery), but because the DLC Space Black finish is so durable and has held up so well, I couldn't find a new model I wanted since that finish is only available now in a $1400 Hermes edition. We'll see what hardware supports WatchOS 10.

change for the sake of change? I finally got the face where I want it.Note that the classic mechanical watch has had the same face for hundreds of years.⌚⌚
It however evolved over time. I desperately need a more mature interface for my ultra, done with the kiddie style that doesn’t match the rugged exterior

Not sure but my impression was that you were talking slightly at cross purposes on the issue of contactless payments in the US and UK. You asked Hartley about contactless payments but for most debit/ credit card providers they differentiate between applepay which is usually virtually limitless in payment value (not all banks do this) and a true contactless transaction where the maximum payment value is strictly limited because there is no authentication. Most banks/ providers treat an applepay transction as equivalent to a chip and pin- by far the most common of physical card transactions- in fact it's the only way you can pay with a physical card. Most of our cards are no longer embossed and do not have a magnetic strip so chip and pin is the only way they can be used. (the magnetic strip readers disappeared years ago). You used to be able to get cards that had no contactless functionality at all- so even if stolen they were useless but they have stopped offering this option- of course you can do this in a diy way by drilling a small hole through the card's antenna. Everything else continues to work. Frustratingly this is not universal. Some banks allow you to turn off contactless in software, but it also blocks applepay!

My wife always gets the notification about my car keys when we are in the car together... which is weird. You would assume if I am in the car with her, the tag would assume it's with me, not with her.

Also, there are some devices, like the Knog Bike Tracker, that I wouldn't want to alert the thief that he is being tracked so he can disable tracking of the device when he took my bike. Yes, i get the stalking people issue, but I'm more concerned about my devices being stolen than someone stalking me.

new watchOS is just the best way to slow down all the old Apple Watch
