The mechanism for MBA goes sleeps???

I just wondering what is the mechanism which makes the MBA of maybe all macbooks to sleep when you close the lid?

Is the latch making it happen or other mechanism?

This maybe a stupid question but I found something weird happened today: my MBA go sleep mode immediately when I placed it on the front top of my macbooks (2008) which was in sleep mode too.....the MBA was awoken after I lifted it up from the macbooks...........

Just wondering why it happened.............is there some kind of magnetic switch hidden inside the monitor or just the latch that put the macbooks to sleep?

There are two magnets hidden behind the bezel at the top of the screen. Use a paper clip to reveal where they are. So there are probably a couple magnet sensors underneath the palm rest, which are likely sensing the magnets from your MB when you stack them up.
