Hi everyone,

I'm new to the whole mac thing and got my first mac (an iMac) just 2 days ago. A whole new learning experience.

I've downloaded and am running uTorrent. uTorrent is showing in the dock, with the text and the small "light" underneath it to show the app is running. However there is no icon, just space. Also in the applications folder, there seems to be a standard icon ("There's no icon, so we'll use this standard icon for the application").

I've attached a screenshot of how it looks in the dock.

I know the uTorrent app has an icon, it was showed right when I downloaded the app and I haven't changed anything, but now it's gone. How do I get it back?

Thanks in advance!

Maybe it is missing? Try to find out if it is where it belongs to be.
1. Go to your applications folder.
2. Search for uTorrent in the applications folder
3. Right click on it. (Or if you have a one button mouse press ctrl on your keyboard and then click)
4. You will see a list of options now, choose Show package contents.
5. You will see a new window with a folder named Contents in it. Open it.
6. In the Contents folder are a lot of other folders. Ignore them and open the folder called Resources.
7. Search for the uTorrent icon. (The name of the icon ends with .icns)
8. Was it there? Or not? Post it. :p ;)
Hope I helped.

Hi. It is there, in the Resources folder.

EDIT: I thought I might add some more info. Now it's not only the uTorrent icon that goes missing. Also the same with VideoLAN (VLC). I've tried rebooting, I've tried actually quitting the app (secondary click on the dock "icon" and then close the app). I've also tried removing the icon from the dock altogether, then dragging it back from the Applications folder. Still no luck.

If anyone could help me, I'm thankful..

Sounds like a really strange problem.
The only thing I can think of now is repairing disk permissions or look into the console log.
You can repair disk permissions by opening a application called Disk Utility. (Just search for it with spotlight. ) Then click on your hard drive (Probably Macintosh HD) and click repair disk permissions.

You could also help us more by opening an application called Console (Search for it in Finder or spotlight) and looking if uTorrrent has any errors.

It really is a strange problem, never heard of it before. It is sad that it ruins your first mac experience.

When I go into Console and search for uTorrent or VLC I don't notice anything unusual, but I've attached some screenshots if you see something that I don't.

I've started a permissions repair which will take a few minutes, I'll repost after.

What I understand from the console (Your language sounds a little bit like my native language) is that it probably is your system, not vlc and uTorrent. However, uTorrent is missing a lot of important things. Try uninstalling it (I recommend uninstalling things with this free application: http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/ )
Maybe it will help.

I solved it. If anyone else has this same problem, and the same difficulty finding a resolutiong, this is what I did:

Open Terminal and enter "killall Dock".
Then rightclick on the app with the missing icon, and choose Open in Finder. Rightclick again on the missing icon in the dock, and choose "Remove from Dock". With Finder still open, rightclick again on the missing icon in the dock and now choose to Quit the app. If the app is still in the dock after this, drag it to the desktop so that it disappears.
After this, from your Finder windows, open the app. With the app open, and now showing in the dock, rightclick on the now visible icon, and choose to have it stay in the dock.

This time also the icon will stick :p I guess there's gotta be a bug somewhere in the code for the dock...
