Just smaller, and for them to make more money, so we have to buy extra cables.

We don't know yet if it allows faster data transfer, as currently there is no point in making a Lightning to USB 3 cable as the NAND inside iPhones isn't fast enough to saturate even a USB 2 connection.

I don't know about charging time but I hope so seeing how the latest iPad takes ages to charge with the 30 pin connector.

It's reversible, you can plug it in either way.

It allows the phone to be thinner and smaller, since the receiver for the connector takes up a lot less space.
