My last MacBook Pro was a 15” 2016 Touch Bar model, which is an easy computer to hate for obvious reasons. But for me, I had issues right from the start that I don’t think were discussed so much as the keyboard and Touch Bar. The screen’s hinge was very wobbly and the USB C ports were so loose that cables would fall right out. And as the years went by I had a speaker blow out, my battery catastrophically failed, and a couple of keys did get the typical butterfly switch problems. The laptop just felt cheap and fragile and it left a bad taste in my mouth. Plus, while I actually liked the concept of a Touch Bar and liked the feel of the keyboard, neither of them were ergonomic in practice and mostly just frustrated me.

For a couple of years I honestly thought I might never buy a mac laptop again, so much so that I actually built a hackintosh for the first time in 2020. Well, the hackintosh didn’t turn out to be ideal for me, especially because I tend to prefer laptops, and I’d heard lots of good things about M1. So a few days ago I decided to bite the bullet and give the 14” MacBook Pro a shot.

And wow is this thing a massive improvement. Besides the M1 pro and screen since those are both obviously top notch (lol), it feels like a truly quality product again. I don’t have a wobbly hinge anymore, my USB C cables fit properly, and I don’t have a finicky Touch Bar to struggle with anymore. The keyboard feels great and I’m not mistyping nearly as much as I used to either. macOS feels snappier than it’s been in a long, long time. And being a computer science student, I’m really looking forward to taking advantage of some of that M1 power (although I am expecting to use another machine here and there for some use cases that aren’t apple silicon supported yet). This computer gives me pre-touch bar vibes all around and I love it.

Anyways, rant over. I know I’m a few months late to the party but I wanted to share how happy I am with my new Mac lol.

Yup, I’m in the same boat. These are truly fantastic machines. The miniLED scteens are such a delight to use. That’s really where things feel the most different to me. The M1 Pro for me isn’t a huge difference from the M1.
