It makes sense, think about it. Software 3.0 will be coming out. The 3G is the current model and the "iPhone" was the original. Anything else would be misleading or confusing... "iPhone 4G", "iPhone 3", "iPhone". They are all confusing of misleading, so doesn't it make the most sense for Apple to add the 3.0 to the name, differentiating itself from the 3G?

Thoughts?
 
It'll be officially the third-generation iPhone or iPhone 3, but marketed as "the new iPhone" and then with whatever the spiffy new feature is. The 3G was added for marketing to let people know it now had 3G. Don't forget that the vast majority of consumers are really stupid and must be told everything about a product as quickly as possible.
 
Errr, wouldn't the iPhone 3G would have been called iPhone SDK or iPhone 2.0 when the SDK was announced then? :)
