I have room on my WFH desk for one nice wireless speaker. Do I go with HomePod, HomePod mini, or something totally different?

What about a 2.1 speaker setup? Anything with a real subwoofer is going to sound better, and the small satellite speakers probably won't take up much space on your desk either. It's probably cheaper too.

Yeah, I actually just donated a super old 2.1 setup when I cleaned my WFH space. Ended up going with a HomePod mini for my desk!

I've had the original HomePod speaker (two of them, actually, as a stereo pair) sitting alongside my iMac for almost 3 years (since the HomePod was first introduced). It is an outstanding speaker. I also have one of the new HomePod mini speakers and it also sounds great - I haven't used it much yet but purchased it out of curiosity and for comparison.

To @thejadedmonkey's comment re subwoofer, I have found that the HomePod has impressive low frequency response, really impressive.

There are lots of great speakers available these days. I like the HomePods because they have the integration with my other Apple devices, serve as a HomeKit hub, have Siri, and so forth.

i need something better than my macbook speaker. whats good for a bluetooth speaker for this? will use it to watch netflix and spotify

Depending on the budget, you can look at hifi speakers or even second hands. You can find good deals and good quality stuff depending on where you live.
