I've been excited about the Apple watch since first hearing of it, and for the same reasons that most people are excited about it. I've been thinking recently, though, about the medical implications of a watch we wear all day that has a motion sensor, a heart monitor, a powerful microprocessor, and communication capability. There are so many medical issues that manifest with heartbeat rate/rhythm and motion that the Apple Watch could (and will as apps are developed) provide early alerts for some medical conditions, and emergency alerts (both at the watch & as texts to selected people in the contact list) in the event of a heart attack, a fall, low blood sugar, and much more. I believe the Apple watch marks the beginning of a breakthrough in wearable medical monitoring, but not as a "medical device" that the FDA would want to control, but as the people's health alert device that grows in function with new apps and new technologies.
At first I wanted the watch for myself as a beautiful timepiece that would be fun and useful. Now I want it for my wife, and several elderly family members who would have fun with it while they provide us with timely alerts to both medical and convenience issues. Apple - You Rock!
