5 port, 1 in, 4 out.

Just get one that meets your spec requirements (10/100/1000). Physically, they're all rather small. Maybe 4" x 4" x 1" thick.

I've had good luck with Netgear's switches (FS105).
 
Well, usually one is labelled "WAN", as that's the one you should connect upstream.
Of course, usually on consumer switches the port has no special function.

The description was for simplicity, as most of the time one port is attached to a DSL or Cable modem, then 4 additional ports are used to share the ISP connection. It's not that hard... :rolleyes: :p
