How much longer can Apple get away with using the superdrive to justify substantial price differences between models? The price of that hardware component alone cant possibly justify the premium you have to pay for it.

The MacBook in particular, many other manufacturers have DVD writers in laptops costing £200/£300 even £400 less that the cheapest MacBook. The same is true of desktop computers.

Do you think the next MacBook and Mac Mini revisions will have the superdrive as standard? Come on Apple, its nearly 2007 !!

Think about it...

it wont be long before the CD/DVD format is dead. CD's are already pretty much dead. who cares about the tiny amount of data you can fit onto a CD anyway?

everything will go d/l'able or streamed, or flash... who knows what the future holds. The CD/DVD form factor isnt the future, thats for sure.

For a tiny number of people maybe. Not the rest of the world.
