So I installed Yosemite last night, had nothing but problems, nothing worked. The console was flooded with errors, so many and so fast, I couldn't make sense of it. I nuked the system and did a fresh install.
Fresh install done, nothing network related works right. I looked into the console and all the errors I was getting were network related. I tried the 2.4 Ghz band instead of the 5 and suddenly, everything is fine.
So I called apple tech support and we tried a few things. Eventually, we tried throwing my old airport on the network with the Asus router. Double nat aside, it worked fine on both the 5 and 2.4 bands. I set it to bridge mode, and again, everything was fine.
So I called Asus about this, and was told my RT-AC87R had a hardware defect and needed to be RMA'ed. lovely. So now I am using my old airport, which lacks QOS and makes that high-pitched whine and clicking sounds every few minutes. It's obnoxious.
I really don't think it is the hardware and here is why. Everything worked with the same configuration under Mavericks. Even resetting everything to factory defaults didn't change a thing. Apple suspects it is the Asus router, and Asus suspects it's the router, and I am thinking ********.
I suspect it is yet another firmware issue with this router, and a bug in Yosemite in handling that 5 Ghz band. Am I crazy for thinking this?
Apple gave me a contact number and extension, and told me to try it like this for a while. If something come up, they want to throw a tool my way to catch traffic or something and look for problems, but we need to rule out the router first. So now, I have to do the tech support tango and RMA the router to rule it out.
I'm displeased.
Ranting aside, has Yosemite caused any other strange networking behavior for any of you?
