I couldn't do without an optical drive in my laptop*. I use it primarily (as late as today) for importing purchased CDs into iTunes (iTunes Store does not have everything, so I can't just buy my music there). Also, occasionally, I use it to play movies (DVDs), and I sometimes burn an Audio CD from an iTunes playlist.
I would hate to not have my DVD drive.
But, undoubtedly, sometime the format will die and we will no longer be using CDs, DVDs and BDs, but, for me at least, that day hasn't come.
* Well, actually, I could use an external DVD drive, but that somehow defeats the purpose of a portable computer...
EDIT: This post was written before the poll was added..
Extra HDD or Battery. Although I'm replacing the optical drive in my new MBP (hopefully arriving this week) with an Intel X25M 160GB SSD. Can't wait, Hopefully I can boot from the SSD in the opti-bay though.
I have a Blu Ray drive in my PS3 and wouldn't want to watch Blu Ray on a smaller screen.[/QUOTE]
Yes but nothing wrong with having the option.
I'd like a second internal drive with hardware support for RAID 0/1. I would like for them to include the external optical drive as standard but if they ever went this route I know that's not going to happen.
After reading this thread and seeing how many people are for the external drive, I think this is the only feature Apple users want removed and Apple doesn't want to give it to us.
