The wifi and bluetooth icons disappeared

This is a weird case that I cant explain. The wifi and bluetooth icons have disappeared from the status bar at the top of the screen. I tried to check them in system preferences but whenever i apply the settings, it goes back to how it was before. Any advice?

Running 10.5.8, Macbook 2.4Ghz

You can relaunch the individual menu bar items from System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras.
