Going out on a limb here, but I believe there won't be an iPhone 9. I think Apple will rather jump and call the new line simply iPhone X'. Simply because Samsung is at 9 with their line already.

Yes? No? Maybe?

We don’t know what they will be called, but there will likely be three models:

iPhone X 2018 5.8 Inch (Premium OLED)
iPhone 6.1” (Midrange LCD)
iPhone X Plus 6.5” (Premium OLED)

Wildcard - new iPhone SE, as the entry level/budget model. We’ll see!

I can’t remember a single event where Apple planned their naming strategy based on Samsung.

The iPhone X skipped the ‘9’ in all likeliness because of the 10th anniversary iPhone. I think they will continue to keep using the numbering cadence as they always have, by showing the largest number indicates the newest iPhone and ages the older model iPhone with the older number.

Also, Samsung has has no relevance to Apple’s numbering in reference to the iPhone.

Considering Apple called the iPhone X as iPhone "Ten," we can assume Apple will continue from "ten" onwards (if they continue with the numbering scheme), or create some new naming system. I will be curious what will the call the LCD 6.1" iPhone.

I don't know about a new iPhone SE because the last time Apple released a new iPhone model/version (not counting the original model) and didn't follow up with a new version the following year was the iPhone 5c.

That was a one-and-done model, looks like the iPhone SE followed the same fate...

The iPhone SE was released in March of 2016 with no follow-up plus with the form factor of the iPhone 8 being so small already I don't see Apple making another model that's even smaller.

Also when you look at the global market you just don't see small phones being that popular anymore, well at least not in first world countries (besides Japan) or with people that like good battery life but who knows.

As much as I want an SE 2, I agree. I do now think there will be no SE2.. it was a one off

Creating the iPhone 9 would not be an issue but creating the 10 would be a serious issue because it would be too easy to confuse the iPhone 10 with the iPhone X since both are pronounced as ten.

Excellent post. When Apple released the iPhone SE in March 2016, Greg Joswiak (Who is the VP of marketing for Apple), stated that they introduced iPhone SE as an entry-level affordable device in a small form factor. My opinion, Apple never had to venture onto a 4 inch iPhone platform again in the first place, but the iPhone SE also reached in countries like China where smart phones are exorbitant in price, but they will continue to sell the iPhone SE likely through 2018 and it will be discontinued 2019, at which point we will know if there is anything that will be in place of it. But the main demographic has shown smart phones with larger displays and bigger batteries are _more_ favorable in today’s smart phone industry.

I don't believe we will get an iPhone 9 either. Since the new LCD version will look like the X, it will either be considered among the X series or simply be called iPhone. Calling the LCD model the iPhone 9 while it looks like a X would be odd. I wish apple would drop all numbering all together.

iPhone (LCD)
iPhone X (OLED)
iPhone X+ (OLED)

I think this is closest. I predict 4 phones:

1) iPhone 8 (The 2017 phone, unchanged but cheaper)
2) iPhone (New LCD Phone)
3) iPhone X (ver 2018, gen 2 -> unusual naming for iPhones, but this is how the watches are done)
4) iPhone X+ (ver 2018)

This lines up with the reports of Apple "discontinuing" the iPhone X we keep hearing... they mean they'll stop making the current 2017 iPhone X model.

The big mystery is phone #2 on my list. I could see it named:
iPhone
iPhone 9
iPhone 8S
iPhone X-something

Honestly, as weird as it is, my favorite name is "8S." The difference between the new LCD and OLED phones is going to be pretty confusing. Having a them named 8S vs X will definitely help lessen that confusion.

I don’t like the ‘X’ moniker, even if they refer to it as the number 10. The name has been overused by different companies for all sorts of products that anyone who decides to use it gives the impression of lacking new ideas. Not that most people will remember the Moto X existed, but they were one of many that used the ‘X’ moniker for their product. Sure, it’s easy to market, rolls off the tongue nicely, and its meaning is almost universally understandable, but it doesn’t dismiss how unoriginal of a name it is for a product.

But the ‘X’ was the perfect representation of the tenth anniversary iPhone. I understand your logic, but Apples logic makes sense regardless of other competitors uses. The iPhone regardless will be remembered because of Jobs contributions, not the *X* title.

I agree. The iPhone X name was used to showcase the 10th anniversary of iPhone. 2018 models should drop the X moniker and simply go with iPhone, or in the very least be called the iPhone and iPhone XI (OLED models).

iPhone XI: First Blood
iPhone Y (pronounced 11)
jPhone followed by the kPhone etc
iPhtwo X

You insinuate like they _won’t_ drop the X Moniker, if logic follows, the next iPhone model should be the 11, so I’m not sure why you would believe otherwise that they would retain the ‘X’. I have said it many times, Apple every single year somehow has to devalue the older model iPhones by introducing the newest iPhone with the highest number, its the cadence of the numbering system. That’s how they always have been and I’m not sure why others believe that they won’t do that again, especially that they don’t use the term “Pro” for an iPhone either.

Thats what I personally think they should do. The 2019 iPhones as just iPhone and then have like iPhone Plus, iPhone SE.

Agreed, yet some folks seem relentless on challenging this line of thinking. As if the world would suddenly implode if apple dropped its numbering system. Can't wait for the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15 or XX. Or maybe they will now use roman numerals to teach the public that each iPhone release in September is the newest iPhone because of the higher number.
