Has anybody tried digital thermostatic radiator valves in the UK?

Not necessarily Home Kit enabled – I'm interested in some of the off-brand ones sold via Amazon that appear to be cheaper than Tado etc but have the same kind of functionality. All we need is to be able to set schedules for each radiator, and ideally do that using our phone.

Never tried any other brand on TRV's......I have only ever had the Tado ones and they have worked perfectly for me from day 1....had all my radiators fitted with them about 3 years ago and each of them are still working as expected.

Amazing, thanks. Couple of questions if you have the time:

1. Do you actually help you reduce bills/manage energy usage?
2. Do you use the Tado app, or HomeKit – or both?
3. We have AC too and I'm thinking of getting Tado's AC controllers, too. Any experience? Do they work together with the TRVs and thermostat?

1) I would have to say that it definitely does help reduce bills and reduce wasting energy by NOT heating areas of the house that are not needing to be heated.
My old set up was set in a way that all radiators would come on if the main thermostat dropped below its set temperature....so this thermostat was in the hall way upstairs, and when that dropped below its set temp, then it would turn on the heating and start heating up 10 radiators whether those rooms were cold or not....then by the time the hall thermostat was back up to temperature, the rest of the house felt like a sauna....wasted gas & energy.
So that is when I started looking at TRV's and stumbled upon the TADO ones.....They were expensive but I was lucky enough to buy them when they were on sale at Argos (worked out better to buy multiple starter kits, as was cheaper..£90 for 2 x TRV's & the Bridge in the starter kit, and sold the spare bridges).
So with all the radiators now fitted with the TADO trv's, ONLY the room that drops below its set temperature comes on (and the downstairs hall radiator, as that is the bypass radiator that always heats up when the heating starts)....and each room can have different temperatures and different timed schedules if you want to do that.

2) I use both the TADO and the HomeKit app, but that is because I am the ones that sets everything up, in terms of schedules, temperatures, room names and general config of the set up......my wife or the kids just needs to use the HomeKit app to manually turn the heating on if its needed.
To be fair though, once the system has been set up and tweaked to your own house needs, then you really don't use the apps much.....but both are super easy to use & control.
Over the years of ownership, TADO has made loads and loads of helpful and amazing tweaks to the TADO app, that has helped me out tremendously....the best one for me being, adding a "child lock" function onto the app....which means that if anyone manually turns the dial on the TRV...it will NOT actually do anything.....very much needed in my house, as we foster children, and children love to twiddle knobs and dials, and one of the kids always turned it on to max (25°c) when going to bed......WOW, that was a hot room in the mornings....thankfully that was when gas was only 2.5p per kWh. lol.

3) I do not have AC in the house, so can't say how that would work out.....although I would hazard a guess that if you have both the AC control unit and heating control unit's, along with all radiators fitted with the TADO trv's, then I would assume that all of it will work together in harmony and turn on and off based on the settings YOU choose in the TADO app......again...this is an assumption on my part.

I just have to say, that for me this has been the most FLAWLESS product I have EVER owned and used.....it simply just does exactly what it is supposed to do.

Many thanks for your reply. It's very useful indeed.

I don't suppose you know why Screwfix seem to be selling two near-identical kits, except one's about £90 cheaper?

Weird…just looks like the colour is the only difference between the two starter packs.

Thanks again. But the Tado kits are just the radiator heads, right? The bottom of the TRV with the little pin sticking out has to be already in place?

Because that's the only difference I could spot between the two kits at Screwfix – one of them is described as being "Heads".

Ah right your looking at the actual TRV kits….I don’t actually know what the ECO versions are compared to the smart versions???
The ECO versions were not out when I got my house done.
You do know that you need the bridge/hub in order for both of those kits to work….and I’m also sure you need to have the room thermostat installed too???? Could be wrong on that, but I have that installed in my house and I’m sure it was needed for the whole system to work/communicate with the actual boiler correctly….as into turn the heating on or off when the TRV needs it.

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for your help so far.

I ran into a problem, which is Tado doesn't list our boiler make as supported (Ideal). I intend to do this DIY, so I really need the installation help their app gives re: wiring in the bridge.

I contacted their help email, and they replied asking for every detail about every part of our heating system, including not just the make and model of the boiler, but also the make and model of the thermostat hardware. And I just don't have the latter, other than it's made by Honeywell. It must be decades old.

So, I think it might be some of the cheaper knockoffs with an internet bridge and just leave the existing thermostat in place.

I would persevere with the email chat with Tado, and take pictures of the Thermostat with the cover down (if it has a cover hiding the settings buttons etc) as they will probably be able to identify the model number.

On my old thermostat (Danfoss branded) there was a sticker on the back of the cover with the set up instructions....and right beside that there was a bunch of numbers (very small writing) that turned out to be the model rage of the thermostat).

If in the end that it turns out your boiler is NOT compatible then fair enough, then its back to the drawing board looking for other brands.

Thought I'd update this in case anybody's considering this and finds it via Google.

In the end I decided Tado was just too expensive. I couldn't bring it down to under £600 for a thermostat plus TRVs for each radiator. Just too much money to drop on something that's nice to have, rather than essential.

Part of the issue is that Tado said I required a wired thermostat, rather than wireless. Despite being simpler and involving less hardware (no control box for the boiler), the wired units are around £150, compared to around £99 for the wireless units. Go figure. I could've used a wireless unit but Tado said there would be no instructions for installation, and DIY is part of the reason for using Tado. I would've had to get a heating engineer to fit it, making it all even MORE expensive.

In the end I went with the following simple Bluetooth TRVs on just a handful of radiators. It's working pretty well and allows me to time the radiator in that room coming on and then going off, and setting the temperature when it does: https://amzn.eu/d/eehqFUW. e.g. I turn off the radiator in my office at the weekend, because I'm not in there. These will pay for themselves over the space of probably just this winter.
