I have just updated to Sequoia 15.3.1 and again Apple decided to enable Apple Intelligence, if I wanted it enabled I would have it enabled. One of the reason I dropped Windows was because I disabled things, and they were re-enabled on updates.
Sequoia 15.3.1 was only a small update, so will I have to check on every update to make sure Apple Intelligence is still off?

I turn it off for a reason, because I don't want it, turning it back on is not going to make me use it, in fact it will turn me more against it wondering why they are so intent on me using it. i have no intereste in using AI, be it Gemini, Apple AI, Co-pilot, ChatGPT or any of them.
I use Alexa and that is enough, more than enough.

Apple wants it on. Do not "think different." Do not be "a crazy one." Resistance is futile. ;)

Check your cloud settings too after each update as an "oooops" (got turned back on there) could result in more profit for Apple. It has basically turned into knowing your settings choices and rechecking each time... especially as some new innovations have monetary benefits to Apple in being "ON."

Though I keep the setting on myself (though I really don't use it at all), here's hoping that going forward with macOS 16 that Apple will allow people to disable it and keep it disabled. I kind of give it a pass this year because it's a (the?) flagship feature of Sequoia.

how dare apple create an OS that isn't exactly what i think it should be. and how difficult it is to turn something off. (i disabled it, just as i don't need siri on my mac, or stage manager et al); so simple.

I am not signed in, so Apple can't turn on my cloud settings.

Linux is the OS I would like, sadly the software is not available for it, so I thought Macos would be the next best thing.
I know it is simple to turn things off, but if I did not check, I would not have seen Apple AI was turned back on until i saw the options in the menu.

Pushing stuff onto people is not going to make them use it if they don't want to. i have no use for this AI stuff, so if turned off, then surly Apple would get the message.

if you suddenly saw AI in use... you'd know it's on; it's not complicated. there's lots of things i love about mac OS, and things i don't love... or need. so i turn them off. and life goes on.

is apple pushing siri, mission control, stage manager... folders, the finder, control center... on us? of course, it's their OS, and we can use (or not use) what we want.

this is how all OSes work.

My Linux box doesn't do this. It's looking more attractive using this as the machine machine every day.

Yep. I'm on Intel so no AI here, but Wi-Fi turned itself back on after the update, as it often does (despite having had the Ethernet cable connected since the day I bought the computer). It took me a while to realise why my game was laggy...

You only know it is there when you see the writing tools in the menus, as far as I know, stage manager is not turned back on after an update, Mission control is something that was available before I started using MacOS.
I think you are missing the point, Apple intelligence is not just p[art of the UI, which is what stage manager and mission control is, it is something thing completely different, and it is not the point that it is there, while I have no interest in it, it that Apple turns it back on after an update.

No all operating systems don't work that way, Linux don't and they never used to operate that way, the problem now is all they want to do is collect data, seem to be everything and everyone want to collect data

I have just noticed my Wi-Fi was turned on, I looked when I read your post, like you, I use Ethernet

i would say that apple intelligence is very-much a part of the OS now... and either way, you can turn it off 👍

i understand that, seems like this AI stuff is here to stay and is going to be pushed onto us more and more, but as EedyBeedyBeeps posted, it would be nice if Apple realise that if we have it turned off we have done so for a reason.,

Had a feeling on the day (even before it was being reported) that Apple would switch it back on, so yeah, checked immediately after and turned it off again on iPhone and Mac. Its said you reclaim +7GB of space on iPhone by doing that, but you'll never reclaim the space the (now embedded) app takes up. All for a bunch of "Squirrel!" features.
Of course, being Apple, there will come a time when they will remove the user option to turn off this 'feature', but until then, I'll be checking Settings with each new set of patches (sorry...'updates').

I use AI and like it there just in case.

What is it doing automatically if it's on and not being used?
people are panicking (not saying they shouldn't...). but again, apple must see it as essential to the OS. and again, you can turn it off. easy.

Oh I don't know, scanning your screen and files and learning everything about you? Don't worry though, everything is done on-device! 😂 Yes, I'm sure it is. And all apple has to do is ask a question about you and receive a yes or no response. If you care about end to end encryption, having AI see everything on your screen and files is not ideal. Am I positive this is happening? No. Is it possible? Absolutely!

To all the people saying you can just turn it off again, what's the big deal... the worst part is even when it's "off" it's still at the very least taking up space and continues to download stuff in the background even when auto updates are completely disabled. I often work off of a (sometimes congested) mobile hotspot, so I don't appreciate it randomly downloading gigabytes of data for stuff I have disabled. See my thread on how I (slowly) figured out that it was downloading stuff for Siri:

Seems to me that  LIKES switching OUR personal settings for their means.
case in point, I always turn off "log in" after the screen saver launches.
as that feature was reverted after upgrading to sequoia from Monterey.

they are not keen developers at Cupertino anymore

I turned Apple Intelligence off and it has remained of even after updating to 15.3.1 on my M4 Mac mini.
Yes, I turned it off in Settings and the toggle switches are definitely off but, I can go to Photos app and still use Clean Up on photos. So, we can't totally turn it off. It may not be off in any kind of way even after turning it off in Settings it looks like. I have even restarted after disabling system protection, deleted the large files in System/Library/AssetsV2, that's where the intelligence files are but, Apple ends up reinstalling/downloading them. So, we can't get rid of it. Actually Apple hasn't redownloaded the largest file that was 5.27GB named com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_GenerativeModels.
