Honestly, if you think about it, why would they just randomly out of no where decide to come out with a silly case that covers the edges only for the new iPhone, I think they knew all along about the antenna issue and wanted to cover it up by promoting people to get the bumpers case.
 
I do think that it is a strange case that really doesn't protect anything, which makes it easy to cry conspiracy (like the 50 other threads with this same topic).

However, I think it is just a case (PUN!) of Apple being Apple and being more concerned with looks than function. They wanted to show off the glass back of the phone which is clearly nicer looking than the ugly plastic backs of the previous generations.
