For all northern Illinois and Indiana people, THE CICADAS ARE COMING!!!!!

In a little over one week, on May 22nd, Brood XIII, the 17-year cicadas will be emerging from the ground.

I don't know about you guys but I haven't been living for 17 years and this is scaring the crap outta me. They're going to be everywhere!!

they look different from the cicadas in my area, i think they came out 2 years ago for my area (around DC)

I just lived through my 3rd cycle a few years back [in Maryland].
They are large.
They are loud.
They are legion.
They plump when you cook 'em.

They are generally harmless to humans. Have fun.

Last time they came out in NJ, one flew into the open car window as we were driving along the Turnpike and pegged me in the side of the face. I almost jumped out of the (fast) moving car!!!

So today's lesson, kids: when the cicadas come, drive with the windows CLOSED.

What's the big deal with cicadas? They're here every summer making a god awful squeal up in the trees but you sort of like it because it's part of the summer soundtrack.

In Sydney in the suburbs in summer they're deadset deafening.

I remember when they breezed through SE Texas a few years back. Bloody insects are loouuud!

Likewise, don't really know what the big deal is. Grew up with them every summer in the Midwest.

The only time I hate them is when they bang into you. Been hit a few times in the head -- smarts a bit.

They really are... look like whole little skeletal bugs. Neat science project for kids.
